Teaching children meditation and mindfulness helps them to be more present and accepting of their current state of being, as well as less reactive to stressful situations as they become more self aware. Meditation cultivates the resting response childrens' bodies need for optimal heath, healing and performance, as well as improves attention to cognitive abilities such as learning, memory and problem solving. This guided meditation for kids teaches the benefits of nasal breathing and belly breathing - breathing in and out through the nose with the belly inflating on each in breath and deflating on each out breath. Nasal breathing filters the air and lowers the heart rate, enducing a state of calm. When people feel stressed, worried or fearful, their breathing tends to be shallow and quick. Breathing slowly, deeply and fully brings us back to the present moment, grounding and anchoring us which can then lead the body into a state of relaxation. In addition, by focussing on something like our breath it can take our attention away from feeling sad, angry, anxious or overwhelmed. This is a great meditation for kids that have trouble winding down at night and going to sleep.
